White Sox announce Ozzie Guillén No. 13 retirement on live broadcast
Chicago White Sox broadcaster Scott Podsednik surprised former manager Ozzie Guillén on live television during the team's home opener Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field by announcing the retirement of Guillén's No. 13 uniform. The reveal came in the bottom of the third inning on CHSN, with host Chuck Garfien and Guillén alongside Podsednik. Guillén reacted emotionally, wiping away tears and hugging Podsednik as fans chanted his name.
Podsednik read from an envelope: "The Chicago White Sox announce today that 2005 World Series-winning manager Ozzie Guillén will be honored on Saturday, August 8, with a special ceremony retiring his No. 13 uniform." Guillén first joked, "Another bobblehead?" before expressing gratitude to the organization. The announcement also played over the stadium public address system.
Guillén managed the White Sox to their first World Series title in 88 years in 2005, defeating the Houston Astros. A shortstop who played 13 seasons with Chicago, he becomes the first manager and the 13th player in franchise history to have his number retired. Guillén has served as a team analyst since 2019.
The retirement ceremony is set for Saturday, August 8, at Guaranteed Rate Field.
